Police in Rukungiri District have arrested three individuals in connection with the assault of Eliab Keinamura, a resident of Rwoobo Cell, Kigaaga Ward, Southern Division in Rukungiri Municipality.
The incident is linked to ongoing political tensions surrounding the parliamentary campaign of Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde.
The suspects, identified as Aaron Nuwamanya, Emmanuel Nuwamanya, and a third individual only named as Santos, were arrested and detained at Rukungiri Central Police Station.
Preliminary police findings indicate the confrontation began when the suspects attempted to place campaign posters of Lt. Gen. Tumukunde on Keinamura’s shop in Kigaaga.
Upon his refusal, the situation escalated into a violent assault, leaving Keinamura unconscious.
After the initial attack, Keinamura was reportedly forced into a vehicle with registration number UAK 105A and transported to Kihindi, where Lt. Gen. Tumukunde is said to maintain a campaign office.
It is alleged that Keinamura was subjected to a second beating at this location before being taken to the police station by the same individuals, who accused him of assault.
Police have confirmed that the three suspects are facing assault charges. The impounded vehicle involved in the incident is also under investigation, as it is suspected to have been used in other possible kidnapping cases.
The victim, Keinamura, has since reported deteriorating health and is seeking justice for the abuse he suffered.
Meanwhile, in reaction to the incident, Lt. Gen. Tumukunde issued a statement asserting his intent to protect his supporters and ensure the integrity of the electoral process, though his remarks have sparked concern for their aggressive tone.
Authorities are continuing investigations, and the suspects are expected to be presented in court once inquiries are complete.
The incident has further heightened political tensions in Rukungiri Municipality ahead of the upcoming elections.
