The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Ibanda has further remanded eight individuals linked to the brutal killing of police officer Suleiman Chemonges during a burial ceremony in Ibanda District.
The suspects, who first appeared in court on April 14th, 2025, were not allowed to take a plea due to the court’s lack of jurisdiction to handle capital offenses.
The case, under reference AA-14/2025, involves charges of murder, contrary to sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act.
Appearing before Her Worship Vastine Kembabazi on Wednesday, the court was informed that investigations by the State Attorney are still ongoing.
Consequently, the eight suspects—Gastone Muhwezi (27), Mwesigye Sam Kikurungi (53), Alfred Arinaitwe alias Mabere (43), Christine Atuhaire (37), Allen Nuwatuha (23), Alex Ahimbisibwe (18), Christine Komugisha (19), and Bayron (29)—were further remanded at Nyabuhikye Government Prison until May 13th, 2025.
The suspects are accused of involvement in the death of Suleiman Chemonges, a 28-year-old police officer attached to Bisheshe Police Post, who was killed during a mob attack while providing security at the burial of Lazarus Kahangire, an inmate who had died while on remand at Nyabuhikye Government Prison.
The court proceedings will continue as investigations are pursued, and the case progresses towards trial.
