Kampala, January 17, 2025 — The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 1,712 confirmed Mpox cases across Uganda since the outbreak began in late July 2024. Of these, 1,089 patients have recovered, while 10 fatalities have been recorded, primarily among individuals with underlying health conditions.
Currently, 169 patients are receiving treatment in isolation centers. The Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, including Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso, remains the epicenter, accounting for 73% of the cases. High-risk groups include mobile workers, vendors, bar attendants, and commercial sex workers, with poor infection control in schools and private clinics further driving transmission.
In response, the Ministry will launch a nationwide Mpox vaccination campaign in February 2025, targeting high-risk populations, close contacts of confirmed cases, and frontline health workers. The public is urged to practice preventive measures, seek immediate medical care for symptoms, and participate in the vaccination program once it begins. The Ministry reassured the public and international visitors that Uganda remains safe for travel and business, with ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak.
For suspected cases, the public is encouraged to call the Ministry’s toll-free line at 0800-100-066.
