Uganda Prisons Service Speaks Out on Death of Ibanda Remand Prisoner

Story by Ivan Mugisha

The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has responded to public concern surrounding the death of 48-year-old Lazarus Kahangire, a remand prisoner who died on April 4, 2025, while in custody at Nyabuhikye Prison in Ibanda District.

Kahangire, who was facing charges of attempted murder under Section 187 of the Penal Code, reportedly fell ill and was rushed to Ruhoko Health Centre IV in an unresponsive state.

He was later pronounced dead at the facility.

His death sparked unrest among family members and the local community, who questioned the circumstances leading to his demise.

In a press statement released on Monday, UPS spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja said Kahangire had been weak since his admission into prison.

A postmortem examination later revealed the cause of death as lobar pneumonia and anaemia.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and UPS has assured the public of transparency in handling the matter.
