Police in Rubanda District are investigating a tragic incident in which a 37-year-old man allegedly took his own life following a domestic dispute with his wife.
The deceased, identified as Barnabas Mugabe, a resident of Karukara Cell, Karukara Ward, Hamurwa Town Council, was found hanging in the corridor of his bedroom on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at around 9:30 a.m.
Preliminary reports indicate that Mugabe and his wife, Lelia Ahimbisibwe, had been experiencing longstanding domestic misunderstandings. On the night before the incident, at about 8:00 p.m., Mugabe allegedly returned home and found his wife preparing supper.
He reportedly removed the food from the fire before it was ready and began assaulting her while trying to take their one-month-old baby.
Mugabe’s mother attempted to intervene but was threatened with violence if she interfered. Ahimbisibwe later fled to Hamurwa Police Station to report a case of domestic violence and subsequently sought treatment at Kakore Health Centre II.
Police say that the following morning, Mugabe’s mother found him sitting outside with the crying baby. She went to Karukara Trading Centre to seek help in retrieving the child, but upon returning, she found that Mugabe had hanged himself.
Police examined and documented the scene before handing the body over to relatives for burial.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.
