Rise in ceasarean sections at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital alarms medics

Story by Twesigye Aggrey

Medical practitioners at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital have raised concerns over the increasing number of women delivering through Caesarean Sections at the facility.

Statistics from the obstetrics and gynecology department for March 3rd to 9th, 2025, indicate that out of 127 admissions to the labor ward, 97 underwent C-Section, accounting for 59%.

Claire Kebeyi, a midwife at the facility, attributes the trend to delays in referrals from village health centers. She noted that primary referral units include Mbarara Municipal Health Center IV, Kinoni Health Center IV, Kabuyanda Health Center IV, and Kabwohe Health Center IV.

According to Kebeyi, referrals are mainly due to the need for further medical management, the absence of a doctor on-site, and the lack of an anesthetic officer.
