NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has unveiled an ambitious package of transport infrastructure projects for Kasese District, promising to transform the region into a major tourism and trade hub.
While addressing supporters at Nyakasanga Playground in Kasese, Museveni announced that government will construct a new international airport in the district and extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the Rwenzori subregion. He noted that renovation works on the Malaba Kampala railway section have already commenced and will eventually connect to western Uganda.
“We are going to renovate the railway line. Work has already started on the Malaba Kampala section, and afterward we shall extend it to this region. Here in Kasese, we shall build a new SGR,” Museveni said, drawing applause from the crowd.
The president said the planned projects form part of his broader strategy to modernize transport, reduce the cost of doing business, and expand economic opportunities for communities across the Rwenzori belt.
With Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mountain Rwenzori National Park, and several mineral-rich zones, Museveni argued that Kasese stands to benefit greatly from improved aviation and rail connectivity.
The NRM presidential flag bearer, who is currently touring the Rwenzori subregion, also emphasized that the new developments will support tourism, boost regional trade, ease movement of goods, and enhance Uganda’s competitiveness within East and Central Africa.
Museveni seeking re-election for a seventh term used the rally to reassure residents that his government remains committed to delivering long-promised infrastructure upgrades and accelerating development in long-marginalized areas.
