The Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID), in partnership with the Uganda Olympic Committee, has launched the Olympic Day Tooke Run aimed at promoting nutrition awareness and youth development through sports.
The event, themed “Move, Learn and Discover for Nutrition Care,” is scheduled to take place on June 20, 2026, at Bushenyi Sports Ground, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to officiate as chief runner.
Speaking during the launch, PIBID Director General Dr. Florence Muranga said the initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed between PIBID and the Uganda Olympic Committee on March 14, 2026.
She noted that the partnership enabled PIBID to join this year’s International Olympic Day celebrations and said the run is intended to create awareness about the importance of proper nutrition among youth and athletes.
Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare urged Ugandans to view sports beyond competition and called on district leaders to invest more in sports development.
Bushenyi District Chairperson Prosper Twebaze pledged the district’s support for the initiative, saying it would help raise nutrition awareness among children and young people.
Organizers said the event aims to raise UGX 4.47 billion to support nutrition awareness campaigns and assist Ugandan athletes preparing for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.
