At least 700 expectant mothers in Kabale District have received essential birth supplies under the “Safe Motherhood Cycle” campaign, a health initiative led by Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament, Dr. Nicholas Thaddeus Kamara.
The distributed Maama Kit Plus packages are designed to promote safe deliveries and reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the region.
Each kit includes vital items such as cotton wool, surgical gloves, delivery mats, maternity pads, gauze rolls, child health cards, surgical blades, Jik, and soap.
Speaking at the distribution event, Dr. Kamara emphasized that this initiative goes beyond Kabale Municipality, with approximately 30% of beneficiaries coming from neighboring areas — a testament to the program’s growing regional impact.
In addition to the kits, Dr. Kamara donated ultrasound machines to four major health facilities in Kabale Municipality: Rushoroza Hospital, Kamukiira Health Centre IV, Rugarama Hospital, and Kirigime Health Centre III.
The move is part of his long-term commitment to strengthening maternal and general healthcare delivery in the region.
Dr. Kamara, a Consultant Physician and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Forum on Non-Communicable Diseases (PFNCD), also announced an upcoming health campaign titled “Know Yourself” (Buryomwe Ayemanye), set to launch in mid-2025.
The initiative will offer free screening services for diabetes, hypertension, sickle cell disease, and various forms of cancer, with an emphasis on early detection, counseling, and prevention.
He raised concern over the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Uganda, citing them as a major contributor to national mortality rates.
The “Know Yourself” campaign will target both men and women across Kabale Municipality and remain a focal point of Dr. Kamara’s health agenda through 2030.
