A prolonged dry spell in Ibanda District has led to a sharp increase in milk prices, making it difficult for consumers to afford this essential commodity.

Farmers report that the drought has caused severe shortages of pasture and water for cattle, significantly reducing milk production. As a result, the price of a liter of milk has risen from UGX 1,400 in mid-January to UGX 1,800, putting financial strain on many households that rely on milk as a staple.

Ibanda District Agricultural Officer Peter Bwengye confirmed the impact of the drought on milk production and urged farmers to adopt intensive farming methods instead of relying solely on free-range grazing.

He emphasized the need for every cattle farmer to plant at least an acre of pasture to ensure a stable food supply for their livestock, aligning with President Museveni’s call for sustainable agricultural practices.
