Supporters of the new political outfit, People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), took to the streets of Mbarara City on Wednesday morning to protest the continued detention of their member, Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Dr. Besigye and other political prisoners remain incarcerated in Luzira and Kitalya prisons, despite a Supreme Court ruling that directed the transfer of their cases from military courts to civilian courts.
The protesters, chanting slogans demanding Besigye’s release and holding placards with messages such as “Free Dr. Kizza Besigye and other political prisoners,” marched through the city before holding a press conference at Grand Holiday Hotel. The demonstration was heavily monitored by police.
Led by Stanley Katembeya, the Western Region chairperson for the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), the protesters condemned Dr. Kizza Besigye’s ongoing detention. They vowed to continue pressing the government for his release, urging religious leaders in the region to join their cause and advocate for the freedom of all political prisoners.
