As the National Resistance Movement (NRM) prepares to commemorate its 39th Liberation Day, leaders from Kisoro District have expressed dissatisfaction with the celebrations, accusing the government of failing to address key issues such as corruption.

The NRM is set to mark the 39th National Liberation Day on January 26, 2025, at Kabamba Barracks in Kasanda County, Mubende District, under the theme, “Celebrating Pan-African Solidarity and the People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-Economic Transformation.”

However, some leaders in Kisoro District have criticized the expenses associated with the event, arguing that the funds could be better utilized to address pressing national issues.

Baker Niyigaba, the Kisoro District Councilor for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), condemned the government’s failure to tackle corruption and the embezzlement of public funds, which he said has significantly hampered service delivery across the country.

“The persistent corruption within NRM leadership has not only derailed service delivery but also hindered the fulfillment of the party’s manifesto over the last 39 years,” Niyigaba said. He further argued that taxpayers’ money is being misappropriated, leaving vital projects incomplete.

Similarly, Emmanuel Ndayisaba, the LC V Councilor for Nyakinama Sub-County, expressed disappointment over unfulfilled presidential pledges, such as the construction of tourism roads and the establishment of the John Kale Institute of Science and Technology.

Ndayisaba attributed Kisoro’s challenges to its unwavering support for the NRM, which he believes has led to neglect of the district’s concerns.

In response, Kisoro District Vice Chairperson for the NRM, Ndikuyeze Ramanthan, commended the party for its achievements over the past 39 years but acknowledged internal challenges. He pointed to divisions among leaders, particularly Members of Parliament, as a major factor contributing to delays in service delivery within the district.

Ramanthan called for greater unity and collaboration among leaders to ensure improved service delivery in Kisoro.
