Kasese Farmers Hit by Caterpillar Outbreak as Armyworms Ravage Maize Crops

By Obed Kithende

Farmers in Kasese Municipality are battling a caterpillar outbreak, with maize growers the most affected.

The outbreak, believed to involve fall armyworm, was confirmed by Municipal Agricultural Officer Asanayiri Muhindo Bukanywa, who warned that the pests can destroy entire gardens and significantly reduce yields.

The most affected areas include Kilembe in Central Division and Kihara Cell in Nyamwamba Division.

Bukanywa advised farmers to carry out regular field inspections and apply early spraying to control the spread. He added that the agricultural office will work with extension workers to sensitize farmers on proper pesticide use and safety.

He also raised concern over increasing cases of stray animals destroying crops, which is worsening the situation for farmers.
