The outgoing Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kabbyanga Kiime, has called for urgent engagement with the Ministry of Education and Sports to allow students in lower secondary and Advanced Level to use personal computers and smartphones in classrooms.
Kabbyanga said the Competence-Based Curriculum and the growing digital era require students to have greater access to digital tools to support research and learning.
He, however, emphasized the need for strict regulations to prevent access to addictive social media platforms and ensure the devices are used strictly for educational purposes.
The minister made the remarks while officially opening a two-day digital literacy training organized by the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) at Kasese Secondary School.
He noted that the training is aimed at building the capacity of both teachers and students to adapt to digital learning under the new curriculum.
The training attracted educators and students from across Kasese District and focused on safe and productive use of ICT in education.
