An 82-year-old man from Rubanda District, who once played a crucial role in transporting President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during the Liberation War, says he feels neglected by the government despite his sacrifices.
James Bukokosi, a resident of Rutoga village in Nyarurambi ward, Rubanda Town Council, shares that he is now grappling with significant hardships and health challenges, even as the country marks the 39th NRM/A Liberation Day Anniversary.
Bukokosi recalls the pivotal moment when he ferried President Museveni on his bicycle to the Kyaka border in Isingiro District, helping him cross into Tanzania during the intense days of the Liberation War.
He was also a former member of the Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM), the political party founded by President Museveni in 1980. Bukokosi was recruited into the Liberation War by Joseph Bitwari, who later became a martyr, executed by a firing squad led by Lieutenant Colonel Ali Fadhul at Makenke Military Barracks in Mbarara District, on the orders of then-President Idi Amin.
During the war, Bukokosi played a critical role, in storing and distributing firearms among the fighters. After the final arms distribution, he hid three remaining weapons. When Amin’s soldiers discovered his involvement in arming the liberators, they launched a manhunt for him. After Amin’s fall, Bukokosi sought refuge and work at Bjordal Mines (Nyamuliro Mine) in Kabale.
Despite his tremendous contributions, Bukokosi feels overlooked by the government and is now calling for support. He hopes that the government will recognize his role and offer assistance as a gesture of appreciation for his sacrifices during the Liberation War.
In response to his concerns, the Rubanda Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Eric Ssewandigi, encouraged Mzee Bukokosi and others with similar experiences to document their contributions and seek verification through Local Council leaders and the District Internal Security Office. This documentation could lead to a formal recommendation to the President for support.
