The Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Trust (BMCT) has announced a new policy that will see the withdrawal of financial sponsorship from learners who consistently underperform academically, beginning next school term.
The announcement was made during a sensitization meeting held at Mabuyemero SDC Primary School in Mupaka Town Council, Kisoro District.
The meeting brought together 27 Batwa pupils currently benefiting from the BMCT sponsorship program, along with their parents.
According to Apollo Kugonza, BMCT’s Programs Officer, the move is intended to promote academic discipline and ensure that the Trust’s limited resources are invested in learners who are committed to their studies.
“We have noticed a worrying trend of poor academic performance among some sponsored learners. This decision is meant to encourage accountability and motivate students to take their education seriously,”
Kugonza said. He also urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to play a more active role in supervising and encouraging learners.
Mabuyemero SDC Primary School Head Teacher, Niyitegetse Amos, welcomed the decision and praised BMCT’s ongoing support.
Community member Niringiye Nzitusi also weighed in, calling on all stakeholders to take responsibility in supporting children’s education.
He highlighted the importance of reducing dropout rates and commended BMCT for investing in the future of vulnerable communities.
BMCT has yet to establish specific academic thresholds that will determine eligibility for continued sponsorship. However, the Trust confirmed that evaluations will be conducted at the end of each school term.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions from the community. While some applaud the measure as a step toward academic excellence, others worry that it could penalize children facing challenges such as poverty, illness, or unstable home environments.
BMCT officials assured the public that each case will be reviewed individually, and additional support systems may be considered for students facing special circumstances.
