Authorities in Mbarara have directed beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM) to begin repaying funds received under the initiative.
In an official notice issued by City Town Clerk Justine Barekye, and addressed to key city leaders including the Resident City Commissioner, Mayor, and Commercial Officer, it was stated that loans disbursed in December 2022 have now exceeded the 24-month grace period as guided by Cabinet.
The notice calls on local authorities to intensify efforts to remind and mobilize beneficiaries to start repaying their loans through their respective PDM SACCOs.
Launched in 2022, the Parish Development Model is a flagship government initiative aimed at transitioning citizens from a subsistence economy to a money economy.
Although the program has registered success in several areas supporting ventures such as poultry farming, piggery, and small-scale baking it continues to face challenges, particularly limited funding amid growing demand.
To date, Mbarara City has received UGX 7.56 billion under the program, distributed to 23 SACCOs and benefiting more than 7,000 households.
