Minister for Security, Jim Muhwezi

By Uziah Tusaasire

The Minister for Security, Jim Muhwezi, has called for the formulation of a bylaw to regulate the consumption of alcohol in Uganda, citing growing concern over rising alcohol abuse.

Muhwezi said the rate at which alcohol is consumed in the country is alarming and poses serious social, health, and security risks.

The minister while attending Christmas Day prayers at Kasoroza Church of Uganda in Rukunguri District noted that Uganda continues to register one of the highest alcohol consumption rates globally.

Statistics indicate that the country leads Africa, with an estimated 12.2 litres of pure alcohol consumed per person annually significantly higher than regional and global averages.

He added that heavy drinking is concentrated among a relatively small section of the population, worsening its social impact.

Muhwezi urged leaders at all levels to take responsibility in promoting responsible drinking and protecting communities from the harmful effects of alcohol abuse.
