Police in Kabale District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified adult male whose body was found lying along the Nyakijumba–Mwanjari Road in Rushaki Cell, Southern Division of Kabale Municipality.
According to police, the body was discovered on Monday and is suspected to have been dumped at the scene after the victim was murdered on Sunday night at an unknown time. The incident was reported by the area chairperson, Namara John Fisher.
Following the report, police officers from Kabale, including a K-9 unit led by the District CID Officer, D/ASP Tumwine Nelson, visited, processed and documented the scene of crime. The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, said a police sniffer dog was introduced to help trace the assailants, but the operation did not yield any leads.
Maate added that statements were recorded from relevant witnesses and the body— which had fresh head injuries and was dressed in suspected bloodstained clothes—was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police are appealing to anyone missing a relative to visit the hospital mortuary to help identify the deceased and allow for a decent burial.
Meanwhile, police in Kanungu District have arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a 52-year-old man, Saturday Alex, a resident of Rwenyerere Village in Kihihi Town Council.
The suspects are Jackline Tushemerirwe, the wife of the deceased, Habert Ngurusi, and Seperanza Twikyirize. According to ASP Maate, the deceased had been married to Tushemerirwe for over 20 years, and the couple was reportedly known for frequent domestic disputes allegedly fueled by alcoholism and long-standing suspicions of an affair between Tushemerirwe and Ngurusi.
Maate said that on Sunday at around 11:00 a.m., a witness, Tumuramye Boniface, saw the deceased and his wife in the company of Ngurusi and Twikyirize as they walked toward their former home in Kyozi Village. Later, at about 3:00 p.m., Saturday Alex was found unconscious in a nearby bush by a woman identified as Mackline, who had gone to collect food from her garden.
She alerted her mother, a sister-in-law to the deceased, and the family rushed him to Kihembe Health Centre II, where he was pronounced dead.
Police further revealed that the body was taken back to the deceased’s home, but the matter was not immediately reported to authorities. At around 7:00 p.m., residents allegedly attacked Tushemerirwe, accusing her of murdering her husband. She was later arrested by the LC I chairperson of Kyozi Cell and handed over to Kihihi Police Station.
ASP Maate confirmed that police officers from Kihihi visited and documented the scene, and the body was later taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
