Supporters and leaders of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in the western region have called on party president Jimmy James Akena to address the persistent internal conflicts that have plagued the party.

During a meeting with party delegates at the UPC offices in Kabale district on Saturday, Obed Habasa, the Rubanda district party chairperson, voiced growing frustrations over the unending bickering between Akena and Peter Walubiri’s factions. Habasa read a statement on behalf of the regional leaders, highlighting how the rivalry between the two top figures has significantly weakened the party’s performance in general elections.

The leaders expressed concern that these internal conflicts have disillusioned UPC candidates, forcing some to abandon the party and run as independents, while others have defected to rival political groups.

Habasa emphasized the need for immediate resolution of the factional disputes, urging Akena to take responsibility and explain the root causes of the divisions. The delegates warned that continued infighting could further undermine UPC’s credibility and effectiveness as a political force in Uganda.
