Police in the Rwenzori East Region, particularly in Kasese District, have raised alarms over a concerning rise in domestic violence cases. According to SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, 27 incidents of domestic violence were reported in Kasese Division alone within the past month.
Of these, 20 cases involved physical violence, including assaults, with 8 husbands being reported as victims of violence by their wives. The remaining cases involved emotional abuse—such as insults and threats—while 3 cases were related to child neglect. Additionally, there were two reported incidents of kidnapping within families.
In response to the growing concern, Tumushime emphasized the importance of peaceful conflict resolution within households. He urged community members to seek amicable ways to settle disputes rather than resorting to violence.
Kasese Town Center Local Council I Chairperson, Mr. Hussein Kule Mustafa, pointed to the failure of family heads to adequately provide for their families as one of the primary causes of domestic violence in the area. He suggested that addressing economic challenges within households could help reduce the tension leading to such violent incidents.
The police continue to urge residents to work together to resolve issues constructively and seek assistance before matters escalate into violence.
