By Ivan Mugisha

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Peter Agaba, has been declared the winner of the Ibanda Municipality parliamentary by-election after a closely contested race.

Agaba polled 14,279 votes (52.19%), defeating independent candidate Innocent Mwine Bakamuhara, who secured 12,904 votes (47.16%). Another independent candidate, Sarapio Betungura, came third with 177 votes (0.6%).

The by-election followed the cancellation of the January 14 poll, which was nullified due to errors on the ballot papers.

Speaking after his victory, Agaba called for unity among residents and pledged to work with all leaders to deliver on his campaign promises.

Ibanda District Election Officer, Nkeija Aidah Barekye, said the voting process was peaceful and orderly.
