Mbarara Woman Drowns in Lake Bunyonyi After Late-Night Swim During Football Match.

Story by Obed Kankiriho

Kabale police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning of a 27-year-old woman in Lake Bunyonyi on Saturday night, during a Liverpool match against Ipswich Town Football Club.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, identified the deceased as Hindu Mirembe, a resident of Kashaka-Nyabugando Village, Bubare Sub-County, Mbarara District.

According to Maate, the incident occurred on February 1st at around 9:00 PM on one of the islands in Lake Bunyonyi, located in Bufuka Village, Mwendo Parish, Kitumba Sub-County.

Mirembe and her boyfriend, Robert Hausvih, had been staying in the area for the festival season holidays, seeking a change of environment. While they were watching the Liverpool match with friends, Mirembe decided to take a swim in the lake. After swimming for a few minutes, she exited the water but soon dived back in and failed to resurface.

Hausvih and his friends immediately jumped into the lake, located her, and pulled her out. Despite their attempts to administer first aid, Mirembe did not respond. They quickly arranged transportation and rushed her to Rugarama Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Maate stated that the drowning was officially reported on Sunday at around 4:00 PM at Kabale Central Police Station. Officers responded to the scene, conducted an investigation, and documented the incident.

He said that a postmortem examination was carried out at Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality. Mirembe’s body was later handed over to her relatives and transported to Mbarara for burial.
