Mbarara city council has announced plans to take action against dilapidated and illegally constructed buildings as part of efforts to improve urban standards and safety.

Authorities say several property owners put up structures that do not conform to approved city building plans, making them liable for demolition.

The initiative is aimed at addressing the growing number of dilapidated structures that are affecting the city’s appearance.

Justine Barekye the Mbarara city town clerk said council will first engage property owners through meetings, urging those with dilapidated buildings to renovate, repaint, and pave the frontages of their premises before enforcement begins.

She also appealed to individuals who own undeveloped plots in the central business district to develop them promptly or consider selling them to investors ready to undertake development, as the city intensifies efforts to promote orderly growth.
