Security operatives in Kisoro District, in collaboration with the Uganda Driving Schools and Operators Association (UDSOA), have issued a strict four-day ultimatum for all motorists in the district to obtain valid driving permits. This directive follows a protest by members of the Kisoro United Bodaboda Association (KUBO) over the impounding of motorcycles lacking proper documentation.
On Tuesday, KUBO members, led by Chairperson Robert Kalangala and Secretary General Baker Batamukoraaho, stormed Kisoro Central Police Station demanding the release of over 30 impounded motorcycles. The bikes had been seized for operating without valid driving permits.
Addressing the protesters, Kisoro Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Badru Ssebyala urged the riders to observe discipline and comply with the law. He emphasized the importance of road safety and lawful operations within the district.
Kisoro District Police Commander, SP Ben Niwamanya Kashumbusha, confirmed that the seized motorcycles would be returned once the owners secured valid driving permits within the next four days. SP Kashumbusha also warned that law enforcement operations would intensify starting Monday, January 20, 2025, across the district.
Abel Kanyankore, National Chairperson of the Uganda Driving Schools and Operators Association, explained that the enforcement operation was launched after consultations with the Ministry of Works and Transport. He clarified that the objective is not to harass motorists but to prioritize their safety on the roads.
However, KUBO leaders criticized the short notice given to comply with the directive. Chairperson Robert Kalangala and Secretary General Baker Batamukoraaho expressed concerns over the limited timeframe, questioning why such operations are being heavily enforced in Kisoro despite prior registration of their members.
As the deadline approaches, motorists in Kisoro are urged to act swiftly to avoid further penalties as authorities maintain that the operation is key to promoting road safety and lawful transport operations.
