Police in Kisoro District have arrested a 24-year-old man, Andrew Kwizera, for the alleged murder of his 72-year-old mother, Molly Nyirabirihanze, in Rukoro Village, Kyanika Town Council.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night when Nyirabirihanze attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute to protect her daughter-in-law.
Kwizera reportedly picked up a wooden stick and struck his mother on the head, inflicting severe injuries that led to excessive bleeding and her eventual death.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the arrest and revealed that a murder case file has been opened to guide investigations. He noted that officers responded promptly, visited and documented the crime scene, and recorded statements from eyewitnesses.
Nyirabirihanze’s body was taken to Kisoro Hospital for a postmortem examination and later handed over to the family for burial.
