Christians at Bubare Catholic Church in Ibanda gathered on Wednesday to mark Ash Wednesday, the start of the 40-day Lenten season, with a call to humility, repentance and a sincere return to God.

During Holy Mass, Rev. Fr. Eladius Tailo reminded the faithful that Ash Wednesday is more than a ritual, describing it as a deep spiritual invitation that highlights humility, human mortality, repentance and conversion of heart.

As ashes were imposed on the foreheads of worshippers in the shape of a cross, the faithful listened to the Church’s traditional words that underscore the call to repentance and renewal.

Fr. Tailo explained that the day’s readings reinforce the message of interior transformation, drawing from the prophet Joel’s call for believers to return to God with sincere hearts.

For many who attended Mass and received ashes, the day marked the beginning of a solemn but hope-filled journey of repentance, reflection and renewed commitment to God.
