Greater Ankole Dioceses Launch UGX 1Billion Drive for East Africa Revival Anniversary

By Aggrey Twesigye

Bishops from the five dioceses of Greater Ankole have launched a fundraising campaign to raise UGX 1 billion for celebrations marking 90 years since the East Africa Revival movement reached Ankole in 1935.

The week-long celebrations will take place from August 26th to 30th, 2026, at St. James Cathedral Ruharo in Mbarara City and are expected to attract thousands of Christians from Uganda and neighboring countries.

The event will be held under the theme: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever,” drawn from Hebrews 13:8.

Church leaders expected at the conference include Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, who will officially open the event, alongside former Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi and bishops from the Greater Ankole region.

Speaking during a press conference at St. James Cathedral Ruharo, Sheldon Mwesigwa said each diocese has been tasked with mobilizing funds to support preparations.

The Bishop of South Ankole Diocese, Nathan Ahimbisibwe, said the conference is expected to bring spiritual renewal and socio-economic transformation to the estimated 7,000 participants expected to attend.

He noted that participants using accommodation arranged by organizers will pay UGX 50,000, while those commuting from home will contribute UGX 30,000.

Meanwhile, the Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Johnson Twinomujuni, urged Christians to attend the conference for prayer, repentance, and spiritual renewal.

The Bishop of North West Ankole Diocese, Amos Magyezi, emphasized the role of the gospel in transforming society, while Alfred Muhoozi said the celebration offers Christians an opportunity to reflect on their spiritual heritage and future journey of faith.
