The government has commenced rehabilitation works on a severely flood-affected section of the 47-kilometer Kerere–Kanungu road in Hamurwa Sub-county, Rubanda East Constituency.

For years, recurrent flooding has rendered the road impassable, disrupting transport, local businesses, and livelihoods in the area.

While on a village-to-village mobilization visit to Shebeya Parish on Monday, Minister of Finance (General Duties) and Rubanda East MP, Henry Musasizi, acknowledged the longstanding issue.

“This road has been a recurring concern for residents and leaders alike,” Musasizi said. “Previous rehabilitation efforts were washed away by runoff from nearby hills, especially during the rainy seasons.”

Musasizi apologized to residents for the delays in finding a lasting solution, attributing the setbacks to persistent heavy rains and recent structural changes in government institutions, particularly the reintegration of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) into the Ministry of Works and Transport.

In the short term, the government is installing stronger culverts and improving drainage to manage water flow and prevent further damage.

Musasizi revealed that long-term plans include tarmacking the road all the way to Kanungu and constructing a permanent bridge to fully address the flooding challenge.

“These interventions are being implemented in phases, and we’re committed to delivering a more durable solution,” he added.

The rehabilitation comes as a welcome relief to residents who have long endured isolation and economic strain due to the poor state of the road.
