Residents of Ibanda Town in Ibanda Municipality have raised concern over the growing piles of uncollected garbage in their communities, warning that the situation could trigger public health risks.
The residents say waste collection services have been disrupted for nearly two weeks, leaving heaps of rubbish along roadsides and in residential areas.
They fear the accumulated waste could attract disease-causing organisms, especially during the rainy season, and have called on municipal authorities to urgently address the problem.
Ibanda Municipality Town Clerk Authaman Ssebaduka acknowledged the delay, attributing it to the expiry of the municipality’s contract with the garbage collection service provider.
This comes weeks after residents raised similar complaints over poor waste disposal, accusing authorities of failing to effectively manage solid waste. Some residents resorted to dumping rubbish in drainage channels, worsening sanitation concerns.
Municipal authorities say waste management remains a major challenge in Ibanda Municipality, partly due to the lack of a permanent garbage disposal site.
