Three Remanded Over Housebreaking in Mbarara

By Akram Ssenyonjo

The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mbarara has remanded three suspects to July 28, 2026, over charges of housebreaking and theft.

The accused, Alex Ssemujju, Daniel Arinda and Deus Tumukunde, all residents of Kakoba Division, appeared before Chief Magistrate Andrew Kabombo.

Court heard that on the night of April 12, 2026, the trio allegedly broke into the home of Ambrose Ahibesibwe in Katete by breaking the door, removing window bars and cutting through the roof before stealing a television set, mobile phones, cash and clothes worth about Shs2 million.

Police later recovered a television set and clothes from the suspects’ hideout in Katete Town, which the complainant identified as his property. A panga, iron bar and screwdriver, believed to have been used in the break-in, were presented in court as exhibits.

State prosecutor Martin Rukundo asked the court to remand the suspects, saying investigations are still ongoing and more witnesses are yet to record statements.

Defence lawyer Allam Musasire applied for bail, arguing that the accused have fixed places of residence and are first-time offenders. However, Chief Magistrate Kabombo remanded the trio to Mbarara Main Prison until July 28, 2026, when the case will return for mention and hearing.
