The National Unity Platform (NUP) coordinator for the Ankole sub-region, Bright Muhumuza, is expected to reappear before the Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Mbarara City today for the hearing of his bail application.
Muhumuza was arraigned before the court last week after reportedly going missing for three weeks. He was charged with committing a rash and negligent act, contrary to Section 211(a) of the Penal Code Act.
The opposition figure, who had been contesting for the Mbarara City South Division Member of Parliament seat, is said to have disappeared on January 14, 2026, a day before the presidential and parliamentary elections held on January 15. His whereabouts remained unknown until he was later produced in court.
According to NUP leadership, Muhumuza is among more than 3,000 party supporters who were allegedly arrested and detained in undisclosed locations on unspecified charges during the election period.
Appearing before Grade One Magistrate Ochieng Yafesi last Thursday, Muhumuza denied the charges. The court adjourned the matter to allow him to formally apply for bail, setting today as the hearing date.
