At least three people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a fatal road accident involving a Trinity Bus, registration number RAT 597K, along the Mbarara–Kabale highway in Rukiga District.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, saying the crash occurred at about 2:30 a.m. at Bukinda. He explained that the bus, which was traveling from Kampala to Rwanda, veered off the road and slid into a trench.
ASP Maate said the injured passengers were promptly rescued and evacuated to nearby health facilities for medical attention. He added that traffic officers, ambulance teams and other uniformed personnel were immediately deployed to the scene to carry out rescue operations, manage traffic and ensure the safety of other road users.
Police have since secured the scene and launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident.
ASP Maate extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public of continued efforts to strengthen road safety and emergency response along major highways.
