Police in Kanungu District have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 54-year-old man identified as Eric Ndamiye, a resident of Nyakagyezi Cell, Eastern Ward, Butogota Town Council.

According to preliminary police reports, Ndamiye—well-known in the area as a habitual drinker—was last seen on Sunday evening drinking at a bar owned by one Niwamanya Gift in Nyakagyezi Trading Centre.

On Monday morning, residents heading to their gardens discovered his lifeless body lying along a footpath leading to his home, just a few metres from the bar. Police said the body bore visible finger marks around the neck, indicating signs of violence and possible strangulation.

Police were alerted by Eridad Byaruhanga, after which a team of officers visited and documented the scene. However, a sniffer dog deployed to track the suspects could not yield results, as the scene had already been tampered with before police arrival.

A postmortem examination was carried out at the scene by medical personnel from Mpungu Health Centre IV, and the body was later handed over to relatives for burial.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing to establish the motive and apprehend those behind the killing.
