Police in Kitagwenda District are investigating the circumstances under which a 59-year-old man was shot dead after allegedly resisting arrest and attacking police officers in Nyabbani Sub-county.

The deceased has been identified as Felisiano Bagubwa, a resident of Rwenkubebe A Cell, Rwenkubebe Parish, Nyabbani Sub-county, Kitagwenda District.

According to the Rwenzori Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Vincent Twesigye, the incident followed a reported case of domestic violence at the deceased’s home on December 27, 2025.

SP Twesigye said officers Cpl  Jocus Kimanywenda and PC Issa Tumuhirwe, tracked down the suspect and found him at a bar in Rwenkubebe Trading Centre, where he was arrested and handcuffed.

Police allege that as the officers effected the arrest, the deceased’s three sons arrived at the scene armed with hoes and pangas and attacked the officers. During the scuffle, the deceased allegedly attempted to grab the firearm from PC Tumuhirwe Issa, prompting the shooting.

The scene was later visited by a team of officers, including homicide detectives, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), and Criminal Intelligence (CI), led by the Officer in Charge of Nyabbani Police Station, ASP Alex Nuwamanya.

Police recovered the AK47 rifle with nine rounds of ammunition, eight cartridge shells from the scene, and blood samples, which were swabbed from both the scene and the body.

The deceased’s body was found lying in a pool of blood along the road near his home, with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, hands, thighs, legs, and lower abdomen.

The body was conveyed to Ntara Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, Cpl Kimanywenda Jocus was admitted to Ntara Health Centre IV in critical condition.

Police say efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the suspects who allegedly attacked the officers.
