Health authorities in Mbarara City have vaccinated more than 1,000 residents against Mpox, with a focus on individuals in high-risk communities, particularly sex workers in the Katete and Nyamityoobora areas.

The vaccination campaign is part of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of the disease in the region.

City health educator Dorcus Twinabaitu revealed the figures during a one-day media sensitization workshop held on Friday at the Red Cross offices in Mbarara, organized by the Uganda Red Cross Society – Mbarara Branch.

Since the outbreak began in October last year, Mbarara City has recorded a total of 638 Mpox cases, with four deaths confirmed.

Currently, 13 patients are receiving treatment at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital’s isolation unit, while 45 others are under home-based care.

Twinabaitu emphasized that sexual transmission remains the leading cause of Mpox infections in the city. She urged residents to be cautious, adhere to preventive guidelines, and report any symptoms early to help contain further spread.

The city continues to monitor the situation closely as public health teams scale up awareness and vaccination efforts.
