Mbarara City Council has begun reviewing designs for five key roads earmarked for upgrade under the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development (UCMID) programme, in a bid to improve urban infrastructure.
The decision was taken during a Technical Planning Committee (TPC) meeting held on Monday evening at the Mbarara City Council Hall. The meeting was chaired by the City Town Clerk, Justine Barekye, and attended by city leaders, including Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi.
The roads under review include Ntare Road, Kitobeero–Karugangama–Butagiira Road, Kitunzi Road and its links, Asuman Matovu Road, and Johnstone Road. The design works are being undertaken by UB Consulting Engineers Limited.
According to Barekye, once the designs are approved, the city will proceed to the next phase of implementation.
She noted that enforcement notices have already been issued to residents and property owners whose structures encroach on the road reserves. Affected residents have been advised to voluntarily remove the encroaching structures ahead of the commencement of construction works to avoid disruptions and delays.
Following the meeting, city officials and technical staff carried out field visits to confirm the right of way along the affected roads.
