Police in Kabale District have launched a manhunt for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 20-year-old boda boda rider and left another young man injured.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at around 5:00 a.m. at Mwanjari, along the Kabale–Katuna highway in Kabale Municipality.
The deceased has been identified as Naboth Owomugabe, a boda boda rider from Nyakayenje Village, Bubare Sub-county in Rubanda District.
The injured passenger, Henry Byamukama, 18, a mechanic from Kagarama Village in the same district, was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
According to preliminary police findings, the collision involved a Toyota Premio with registration number UA 325AL, which was traveling from Kabale town toward Katuna.
The vehicle allegedly attempted to overtake another car and collided head-on with the motorcycle that was approaching from the opposite direction. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and remains unidentified.
Owomugabe died instantly, while Byamukama sustained serious injuries. The motorcycle was reportedly removed from the scene by unknown individuals and has not yet been recovered.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and said that police officers responded promptly to document the scene and begin investigations.
The body of the deceased was later transported to his home in Rubanda District for burial arrangements.
Police have urged anyone with information about the vehicle or its driver to report to the nearest station to aid the ongoing investigation.
