Isingiro District NRM flag bearer, Lillian Ruteraaho, has opposed a recent directive by Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Justice Simon Mugyenyi Byabakama, which requires voters to leave polling stations immediately after casting their ballots.

Ruteraaho argued that the directive could create opportunities for electoral malpractice, warning that forcing voters away from polling stations may facilitate vote rigging.

Addressing the press at her home in Isingiro District on Wednesday, Ruteraaho emphasized that transparency is a key pillar of a credible electoral process and must be upheld at all stages, including vote counting.

Citing Section 33(4) of the Presidential Elections Act, she noted that the law provides for transparency throughout the electoral exercise and requires that vote counting be conducted in full view of the public. She further clarified that Regulation 25 only limits overcrowding within polling premises and does not prevent voters from remaining at polling stations to observe the process.

Ruteraaho also highlighted that voters have a constitutional right to stay at polling stations after voting, provided they do not interfere with the exercise. She urged Ugandans to turn out in large numbers, cast their votes, and remain vigilant to safeguard the integrity of the election.
