Eight people have died in a road accident along the Mbarara–Lyantonde Highway.
According to Rwizi Region police spokesperson Samson Kasasira, the accident occurred at around 6:30 PM at Kibega 1 Village and involved two vehicles: a white Toyota Hiace (registration UBQ 016U) and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer (registration KDQ 668L/ZH 5133).
Preliminary reports indicate that the Toyota Hiace, traveling from Mbarara to Lyantonde, attempted to overtake on a corner and collided head-on with the trailer, which was coming from the opposite direction.
The collision caused multiple fatalities and serious injuries among the Hiace passengers. Four of the victims remain trapped inside the vehicle, and rescue efforts are ongoing.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution along the highway while investigations continue.
