The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Isingiro on Thursday evening remanded a 48-year-old clinician attached to Nyamuyanja Health Centre IV over allegations of stealing government medicines.
John Baptist Muzahura was arraigned before the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Patrick Bamuhiga and charged with the alleged theft of 18 boxes of government medicines, charges he denied.
Court ordered that Muzahura be remanded in custody until December 30, when his bail application will be heard.
Speaking to journalists after the court session, the National Drug Authority (NDA) spokesperson, Dr Abiaz Rwamwiri, said the authority spent substantial resources tracking down the suspect and expects the court to handle the matter accordingly.
Dr Rwamwiri also cautioned health workers against engaging in drug theft, noting that nearly half of medicines supplied to government health facilities are reportedly stolen nationwide.
