Otafiire Warns Government Leaders Against Tarnishing NRM’s Image

By Aggrey Twesigye

The Minister of Water and Environment, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, has cautioned government leaders against actions he says are damaging the image of the government among Ugandans.

Otafiire said some individuals within government are portraying the administration negatively and warned them against abandoning the principles and values that have guided the government over the past 40 years.

He said the current government was established after a liberation struggle to restore peace, stability, and sanity in Uganda, and urged leaders to remain committed to the ideals upon which it was founded.

Otafiire made the remarks on Sunday while presiding over the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Foundation (AMDEF) fundraising Mass at Kitabi Parish under St. Kaggwa Deanery in Bushenyi District.

The event was organised to raise funds for development projects under the Archdiocese of Mbarara.

Dr. Silver Mugisha, the AMDEF Coordinator and Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), said the foundation, which was launched last year, raised Shs3 billion in 2025 from the 13 districts under the Mbarara Archdiocese. He said part of the money has already been invested in the construction of an arcade at the Catholic Social Centre, a project valued at Shs12 billion.

According to Dr. Mugisha, the foundation aims to establish sustainable income-generating projects for the Archdiocese, improve the welfare of priests, and support the establishment of schools and health facilities across the Archdiocese.

The Archbishop of Mbarara, Most Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha, who led the Mass, called on Christians to continue supporting the Church’s mission and development programmes.

The fundraising event attracted several dignitaries and raised more than Shs100 million to support the Archdiocese’s development projects aimed at strengthening its long-term financial sustainability.
