Mbarara district issues demolition notices to churches, school in crackdown on illegal structures

By Aggrey Twesigye

Authorities in Mbarara District have issued demolition notices to several structures, including a number of born-again churches and Rubindi Preparatory Primary School in Rubindi Ruhumba Town Council, as part of a broader effort to restore order in urban areas.

Joseph Mwesigye the District Senior Environment Officer said officials have begun mapping buildings constructed illegally, identifying those slated for demolition, and assessing sanitation and hygiene conditions.

He noted that some of the affected structures, including churches and the school, do not meet required standards and have consequently been earmarked for removal.

Mwesigye expressed concern over the deteriorating state of sanitation in town councils such as Rubindi Ruhumba, blaming it on the destruction of drainage systems and sanitary lanes by unregulated construction.

He added that authorities have already marked buildings that must be demolished, as well as those that can be renovated, alongside plans to reopen blocked drainage channels.

Adam Bwisho the District Commercial Officer said the exercise is aimed at restoring order and improving the overall condition of the town.

Denis Asiimwe the Rubindi Ruhumba Town Clerk warned that many buildings in the area are in poor condition or located within road reserves.
