Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi has secured a third consecutive term as Mayor of Mbarara City after winning Thursday’s mayoral elections.
The Mbarara City Returning Officer, Violet Atuhuura, officially declared Kakyebezi the winner on Friday morning.
Running on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, the incumbent polled 21,117 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Stanley Katembeya Tugume of the People’s Progressive Front (PPF), who garnered 8,731 votes.
Other contenders included Agaba Senex Twongirwe (Independent) with 2,756 votes, Mark Itogoro Nyabiheemu of the National Unity Platform (NUP) with 533 votes, and Mweteise Bintabara of the Alliance for National Transformation, who received 170 votes.
Speaking after his victory, Kakyebezi pledged to improve service delivery in the city and called for unity among political rivals, urging collaboration to advance Mbarara’s development.
