A total of 4,724 special polling constables from the Kigezi region have commenced training to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to maintain security during the 2026 general elections.
The training, taking place at Kigezi College Butobere in Kabale District, was officially opened by Alex Wabwiire, the Kigezi Region Police Commander. Wabwiire cautioned trainers to handle the recruits with patience and care, noting that they are civilians of varying ages who have not undergone medical assessments to determine their physical fitness.
He emphasized the importance of strict time management to ensure all training objectives are met. Wabwiire also highlighted the need to teach essential standards, including proper conduct toward superiors, adherence to uniform regulations, professional behavior while on duty, and a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities at polling stations.
Gilbert Mwebembezi, the Kigezi Region Police Community Liaison Officer, encouraged the trainees to remain focused and dedicated throughout the exercise. He stressed discipline, respect for trainers, and cooperation among trainees, warning that indiscipline or misconduct would not be tolerated.
