Police in Kanungu District are investigating the death of a 51-year-old man in what is believed to be a domestic violence incident.

The deceased, identified as Ngambeki Spiriano, died instantly on Tuesday at around 2:00pm after a violent altercation with his former wife, Nzabaruntume Dinavance, 48, at Group Farm B Cell, Kibimbiri Parish, Kihihi Sub-county.

According to police, the two had previously been married and had children together before separating. Ngambeki later moved to Kebisoni in Rukungiri District, where he married a second wife, while Dinavance remained at their former home in Kanungu with her grandchild.

On the day of the incident, Ngambeki reportedly travelled to Kanungu with his second wife and left her at Kibimbiri Trading Centre before proceeding alone to check on his ex-wife. Police say a serious fight broke out between the two behind the house, during which both suffered severe injuries. Ngambeki died on the spot.

After realizing that her former husband had died, Dinavance allegedly phoned their son-in-law, identified as Benon, asking him to come and pick his child from her home. When Benon arrived, he found Ngambeki’s body lying near the back door. He raised an alarm, prompting neighbours to rush to the scene, where they apprehended the suspect as she reportedly attempted to flee.

Police officers responded, re-arrested the suspect from residents, and conducted a scene examination. Statements were recorded from key witnesses, and officers recovered clothes believed to belong to the deceased from a pit latrine behind the house. The body had reportedly been cleaned and dressed in different clothes.

Ngambeki’s body was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for a postmortem, while Dinavance was also taken for medical attention after sustaining a deep head injury during the fight.
