NEMA Orders Probe Into Alleged Wetland Encroachment by Senior Army Officer in Kitagwenda

Story by Ivan Mugisha

The Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, has instructed the Kitagwenda District Natural Resources Department to compile a detailed report on alleged wetland encroachment by a senior officer of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).

The directive comes in response to a recent investigative report by Crooze FM, which exposed alleged illegal construction activities by Lt. Col. Harold Twinomujuni Akiniagi in the Rwentuha Wetland along the Kitagwenda-Kamwenge road.

Dr. Barirega confirmed to Crooze FM that his office had received credible information regarding the incident and acted swiftly by tasking the district authorities to investigate and provide findings for urgent review.

Wetlands in Uganda are protected under the National Environment Act, and any unauthorized development is considered a serious violation.
