The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced a planned nationwide power shutdown to facilitate essential system upgrades and maintenance works aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply across the country.
The maintenance exercise began on May 12 and is expected to run through May 18, 2025, affecting several regions nationwide.
According to Jonan Kiiza, UEDCL’s Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs, the scheduled maintenance is part of a broader infrastructure improvement strategy designed to enhance the safety, stability, and efficiency of Uganda’s power distribution network.
“This work is critical to strengthening the performance of the grid and ensuring long-term service delivery,” Kiiza said, urging the public to remain patient as engineers carry out the upgrades.
Among the areas expected to be affected are districts in the Ankole Sub-region, including Ibanda, Mbarara, Ishaka, and Ntungamo.
Other regions such as Kasese, Katereera, Kitgum, Masaka, Natete, and Hoima will also experience temporary outages.
UEDCL has assured the public that efforts are being made to complete the maintenance on schedule and restore normal power supply as quickly as possible.
The company is also advising customers to take necessary precautions during the outage period.
