Police in Kasese district have launched investigations into the death of Elias Bwambale, a 47-year-old resident of Kanyangeya Ward, Nyamwamba Division, who was fatally attacked by a stray elephant at his home. The tragic incident occurred yesterday at around 2:00 a.m., according to Bwambale’s wife, who raised an alarm that prompted local residents to respond.

Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report wildlife sightings to prevent further tragedies. Police officers from Kasese Central Police Station (CPS) responded swiftly to the scene, but despite efforts to save him, Bwambale was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital.

The incident highlights the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in Kasese, which has resulted in multiple fatalities over the years. In January 2025, a herd of elephants killed 34-year-old Emmanuel Kiiza while he was guarding his rice garden in Hima Division. Other past victims include 27-year-old Tadeo Tumwesigye in 2022 and 33-year-old Yoram Mugisha in 2023. These recurrent attacks have raised growing concerns among residents, who continue to live in fear of wildlife encroachment into their communities. Authorities have acknowledged the need for urgent measures to address the escalating conflict.
