Ugandan General Court Martial frees 7 Rwandan Nationals,Government to be Sued.
The General Court Martial at Makindye Kampala has today Tuesday, January 07, 2020 set free 7 Rwandan Nationals who have been on remand at Luzira prison and at the Military Police Barracks respectively on charges of unlawful possession of firearms.
The 7; Renne Lutangungira, Bahati Mugenga, Emma Rwamuco, Augustine Rutisili, Etiene Nsanzabahizi , Charles Byaruhanga and Claude Iyakaleme had been imprisoned for more than a year since Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) arrested them from districts of Isingiro, Mbarara western Uganda and Kampala central Uganda.
As the suspects appeared in court today, the 7 member court Chaired by Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti, the Prosecutor Lt Col Rapheal Mugisha tendered the withdrawal letter of the freed Rwandese to the Army court, that government has lost interest in this case.
However the suspects’ Lawyer Eron Kiiza, says he will sue government for malicious prosecution and seek compensation for illegal detention of his clients since no single witness has been produced to implicate them to alleged crime.
